Telephone System Security
Long Distance Toll Fraud

Telephone long distance fraud is a growing problem. Thieves are targeting unprotected or poorly protected telephone systems for the purpose of using and/or reselling long distance capabilities.

The thief accesses an unprotected mailbox within your telephone system that has outbound transfer enabled. He/she then enters a long distant number (usually an international location) in the outbound transfer field within the mailbox (yes this can be done from a remote location simply by logging as the real user). He/she then changes the access password to prevent the real user from disabling the feature. The thief can now call into your company as a genuine customer, dial the extension with the modified mailbox and voila he is now talking to his friends anywhere in the world.

The good news is, there are measures you can take to protect yourself from toll fraud.

Protect and restrict system programming access by using an administrator password other than the default.
Turn off outbound transfer in mailboxes that do not need the feature.
Mailbox password need to be complex. Especially the ones that use outbound transfer feature. Never use 1234, 1111, 0000 as your mailbox password.
