Requently Asked Questions

What is Voice Over IP (VoIP)?
Voice Over IP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is a catch all phrase to describe telephone service on a computer network. VoIP really has two components. Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). At TeleMarv Services we differentiate the two technologies by calling LANVoice Over Internet Telephony and WAN as Voice Over IP

  • WAN: Internet Telephone Service Providers (ITSP) use VoIP technology to bring dial tone to your home or office through services like babyTel. ITSP's connect to your telephone equipment through a high speed internet connection and possibly a gateway box to convert VoIP signal into the analog Services available are standard telephone services with caller ID, Call Waiting, Voice Mail and free long distance. VoIP "lines" are called voice paths because there is no physical phone line. Advanced features available are Direct Inward Dialing (DID)
  • WAN also includes voice calls between two locations on a secured network. Also called branch to branch.
  • LAN: VoIP also means Voice Over Internet Telephony over you internal computer network. . Traditionally you had two networks in your office, one for voice and one for data. With VoIP you can now eliminate your seperate voice network in favour of a converged data nework.

Why Alworx?
Alworx is a world class server. It's a phone system, a data network with NAT firewall, email server and a basic web server. All in one
.

I've heard VoIP is expensive?
Allworx is very competitive with tradition telephone/data network installations. Alworx is one of the only VoIP servers that is fully licensed. Most VoIP system requires a license for every user and for every option that user is to have access to. This can add hundreds of dollars to the cost for each user.

What about moves adds and changes?
Allworx VoIP is different from traditional telephone systems in this regard.
  • VoIP telephone systems are not port based as with traditional systems. Once a phone has been linked to a user profile it belongs to that user no matter where on the network or in the world, with VPN software, that phone is plugged.
  • Adding a phone is a simple as creating a user, associating that user to a telephone and plugging the phone into a jack connected to your data network.. THERE ARE NO LICENSES TO BUY.
  • Allworx programming is web based. All programming is done from a PC connected to your network. Each Allworx server has one VPN access point that allows us to do all program changes from our office. We charge half our on site hourly rate for remote programming and with our maintenance programms remote programming is free of charge.

I've heard the term "Teleworking", what is it can VoIP do this?
Teleworking is working from home or a remote site. With Allworx and the optional Virtual Private Network (VPN) software, simply take your telephone home or on the road with you and plug it into a data network with high speed internet access and you are virtually sitting at your desk at work.
